about

When an avalanche killed more than a dozen Sherpas and climbers on Mt. Everest a remarkable confrontation occurred; native Sherpas claimed that the mountain deity had spoken definitively, essentially closing the mountain for a season in response to the abuse and exploitation of Western climbers, while Western climbers claimed that they had a right to climb because they had paid for permits to do so. One group saw an honored deity where the other saw merely a trophy to be scaled, photographed and conquered.
